Home Entertainment: Pianos. Organs. Musical Instruments. That's how a sign in downtown San Antonio reads. It sits on top of an old building, an old sign that is losing a fight with the elements. What struck me is the definition of home entertainment - pianos and organs. Today, home entertainment is HDTV, plasma screens, home audiovisual centers connected to integrated speakers. ipods supply the music and DVRs supply the shows on demand.
Pianos and organs are not home entertainment any longer. Today organs are found in concert halls and churches. Sunday morning I sat in church singing a 154 year old hymn accompanied by an organ.
The sound of an organ equals church for many people. But it isn't a familiar sound to young people. You just don't find organ music on ipods.
Organs became popular because they could produce a great, big sound to accompany lots of people singing. Today, we have microphones and amplifiers for that purpose.
Organs and pianos are the home entertainment of yesterday. The shop downtown is long gone. Many people say the same about the worship happening around organs in congregations across the country. They say this while listening to their ipod.
